SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The job description for the Pre-Operative Nurse incorporates the summary and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse job description and the specific duties listed below. The Pre-operative Nurse reports to the Pre-operative/PACU Charge Nur se, Director of Nursing and Administrator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Greets patient on arrival in the pre-operative area.
• Identifies the patient, applies arm bands and initiates nursing documentation in the patient's medical record.
• Assures belongings are properly labeled and placed under patient stretcher and/or valuables are given to a family member or locked up.
• Questions patient on allergies, last intake of food or drink, and charts responses.
• Verifies operative consent for correct procedure and site, doctor's name, patient's signature, and date and time.
• Verifies chart has completed history and physical.
• Takes vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respirations) and charts on arrival and as necessary.
• Conducts the pre-operative patient assessment according to facility policy and in accordance with anesthesia guidelines.
• Completes pre-operative check list and signs his/her name.
• Perform pre-op teachings and provide emotional support to patient as needed.
• Verifies chart for appropriate laboratory work and notifies physician of any abnormal value, which should also be reflected in the medical record documentation.
• Verifies physician's orders and performs procedures as ordered.
• Gives appropriate medications per physician's orders.
• Eye drops
• Antibiotics
• Pre-medications
• Prepares area as designated by procedure and chart.
• Communicates with OR personnel about any problems which arise; Physician or patient delays.
• Performs other duties as directed by the Supervisor.
• Reports malfunctioning equipment to the Director of Nursing.
• Assists with receiving and storing supplies.
• Maintains an adequate supply of pouches, tape, wrappers, etc., used in the processing area.
• Disposes of contaminated needle containers in appropriate receptacle.

QU ALIFICATIONS:

• Current licensure in this state as a Registered Nurse.
• Current BCLS certification.
• PALS and ACLS certification preferred within six (6) months of date of hire.
• Preferred previous work experience in an ambulatory surgery setting or acute hospital recovery room or a critical care area or operating room of no less than one (1) year.
• Mental and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
• Intermittent physical mobility/activity including walking, standing, sitting, light lifting, pulling or pushing of carts, equipment, etc. Must be able to bend body downward at the waist; be able to kneel.

• recovery room or critical care: 1 year (Preferred)

Education:

• High school or equivalent (Required)

License or certification:
